Juror's Statement:
I am honored to have juried Monochrome. I congratulate all of the artists who submitted to this exhibit. Please know that ultimately you are your own judge and juror of your artwork. Your perspective is important and I ask that all of the artists that submitted continue extending your creative ideas and visual language to the public. I thank the staff at Framations for their kind hospitality and their continued work to offer exhibits that allow local artists a venue to express themselves through their art.
Over 80 works of art in a variety of media, demonstrating different techniques, concepts and subject matter, all while focusing primarily on the idea of monochromatic work were offered up for this exhibition and 33 were selected. Monochromatic requires the artist to take one color and play with the value – darken and lighten the color to create artwork the viewer can enjoy. This is not an easy task. Those selected for this exhibition seemed to not only illustrate an extraordinary understanding of this technique, but pushed the boundaries of what it means to be monochrome.
I congratulate the award winners: To first place – the technical skill and the hidden nuances found throughout this mid-tone drawing made for a curious and outstanding artwork. To second place – the insightfulness in finding grayscale in our naturally colored world was highly imaginative. To third place – your beautiful hand-dyed textile kept me looking throughout the work for the little intricacies of stitches and dyes. And to the honorable mentions – you played so beautifully with this monochromatic concept and I applaud your ideas and technical skills.
Mark Rothko said “silence is so accurate.” I am impressed with how dramatic and accurate this selection of artists’ work is in the “silence” of one or two colors. Great job to everyone! ~ Juror Nicole Dutton
